FAQ

OpenTofu questions

What is OpenTofu?

OpenTofu is an open-source infrastructure as code tool, forked from Terraform in 2023 and licensed under MPL 2.0. It uses the same HCL language and providers as Terraform.

Is OpenTofu compatible with Terraform?

Largely. OpenTofu began as a fork of Terraform 1.5, so most Terraform configurations, providers, and modules run unchanged. Check state last written by a newer Terraform version against your OpenTofu version before moving it.

How do I use StackShip as an OpenTofu backend?

Add a cloud block with hostname = "stackship.run", your organization, and a workspace. Run tofu login stackship.run, then tofu init. State, locking, and runs then live in StackShip.

Which OpenTofu versions does StackShip support?

Any stable OpenTofu release from 1.6.0 onward. Each workspace pins an exact version, and changing it affects only new runs.

How do I migrate from Terraform to OpenTofu?

Point your configuration at OpenTofu, run tofu init, and confirm tofu plan shows no unexpected changes. To move state into StackShip, use tofu state push from a clean directory.
